HPV Vaccination Service
🧬 HPV Vaccination Service
Protect yourself against HPV and reduce your risk of certain cancers and genital warts
At New Milton Pharmacy, we are now offering the private HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination service to help protect both men and women against one of the most common viral infections in the world.
HPV is linked to several types of cancer and genital warts — but vaccination is a highly effective way to reduce your risk.
🦠 What is HPV?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus that is spread through sexual contact. In many cases, it causes no symptoms and clears on its own. However, in some people, the infection can persist and lead to health problems over time.
Certain strains of HPV are linked to:
- Cervical cancer
- Vaginal and vulval cancers
- Penile cancer
- Anal cancer
- Throat (head and neck) cancers
- Genital warts
HPV is so common that most sexually active people will be exposed to it at some point in their lives.

💉 About the HPV Vaccine
The HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) protects against multiple high-risk HPV strains, including those responsible for most HPV-related cancers and genital warts.
How it works:
- Given as an injection into the upper arm
- Helps your immune system develop protection against HPV infection
- Offers long-term protection
How many doses do I need?
This depends on your age and medical history:
- Most people under 25 may require 1 dose
- Those aged 25 and over, or with a weakened immune system, may require 2–3 doses
Our pharmacist will confirm your personalised schedule during your appointment.
Boosters:
Booster doses are not currently recommended.
👥 Who is this service for?
This private service is suitable for:
- Men and women aged 9 years and older
- People who missed the HPV vaccine at school
- Those who wish to start or complete a vaccination course
- Individuals wanting additional protection beyond the NHS programme
The vaccine is most effective when given before exposure to HPV, but you can still benefit even if you are already sexually active.
⚠️ Who should not have the vaccine?
The HPV vaccine may not be suitable if:
- You have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose
- You are allergic to any vaccine ingredients
- You are unwell or have a high temperature on the day of vaccination
- You are pregnant (it is suitable during breastfeeding)
Your pharmacist will complete a short screening before vaccination to ensure it is safe for you.
🌡️ Possible Side Effects
The HPV vaccine is generally very well tolerated. However, some people may experience:
- Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Headache
- Mild fever
- Nausea or dizziness
- Tiredness
These side effects are usually mild and short-lived.
As with all vaccines, we may ask you to remain in the pharmacy for 15 minutes after your injection for observation.
🛡️ Why vaccination is important
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide.
While condoms can reduce the risk, they do not fully prevent HPV infection, as the virus can be present on skin not covered by protection.
Vaccination offers a much higher level of protection against the most harmful strains.
Even after vaccination, we recommend:
- Continuing safe sex practices
- Attending regular cervical screening (smear tests) if eligible
- Seeking medical advice if you notice unusual symptoms such as abnormal bleeding
👩⚕️ Additional Information
- The NHS routinely offers HPV vaccination to school-aged children (typically Year 8)
- Catch-up vaccination is available on the NHS up to age 25
- The vaccine is widely used worldwide to reduce HPV-related cancers and disease
