🔎 What is Vitamin B12 and why is it important?
Vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamin) is an essential nutrient that helps:
- Keep your nervous system healthy
- Maintain healthy red blood cells
- Support energy production and brain function
Your body does not produce Vitamin B12 — it must be obtained through your diet. It’s found naturally in foods likemeat, fish, dairy, and eggs, so those following a vegan or plant-based diet are at higher risk of deficiency. You may also be at risk if you’ve had bariatric surgery or have conditions like pernicious anaemia, which affect absorption.
🩺 Common symptoms of B12 deficiency
Vitamin B12 deficiency can present in various ways. Symptoms may include:
- Extreme tiredness or fatigue
- Breathlessness, dizziness, or feeling faint
- Memory issues or mental fog
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Pins and needles or numbness
- Palpitations or low mood
- Sore tongue or changes in vision
If you’re experiencing any of these, you may benefit from B12 testing or treatment.
