We are pleased to now offer the Meningitis B (MenB) vaccination as part of our private vaccination services here at New Milton Pharmacy.

💉 What is Meningitis B?

Meningitis is a serious, potentially life-threatening infection that causes inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can develop rapidly and lead to severe complications such as brain damage, sepsis, or even death.

Meningitis B is the most common strain of bacterial meningitis in the UK and is caused by meningococcal group B bacteria. It spreads through close contact such as coughing, sneezing, kissing, and sharing utensils.

👶🧑 Who is at Risk?

Although meningitis can affect anyone, it is most common in babies, young children, teenagers, and young adults, especially those in close communal settings such as nurseries, schools, colleges, and universities.

Even if you or your child have not received the MenB vaccine as part of the NHS childhood vaccination programme (introduced in 2015), protection is still possible through a private course.

• Protection: Estimated to protect against ~88% of circulating MenB strains in the UK
• Dosage:
  • A full course consists of two doses, given at least 4 weeks apart
  • Available for adults and children aged 2 years and above
  • Side effects are typically mild and short-lived (e.g., soreness at injection site, headache, fever in children)
